Borgo Zucco

Bassano del Brenta > East bank - South

Michele Brunelli

Borgo Zucco is the smallest borough of Bassano. It is immediately south of Centro storico and is enclosed between Centro Storico (to the north), Santa Croce and Merlo (to the east and south), and San Fortunato (to the east). Though having some uncultivated fields, it is one of the most densely populated areas of Bassano. Actually, only one short portion of a ditch is visible. According to the documents, its name should be something like Canale Sanatorio and it is the only branch of the network of roste visible in this borough. For most of its course, it flows underground. It originates from Canale Canale Occidentale di Ponente, in Quartiere Firenze, and flows through Santa Croce. In turn, Canale Occidentale di Ponente derives ultimately from Canale Ca' Barziza, which originates in Campolongo, near Campese borough, and from Tronco-Basso, which waters the north eastern part of Bassano. After running through (and under) Borgo Zucco, Canale Sanatorio runs some metres under San Fortunato borough and flows into Brenta.

Surviving rosta (Canale Sanatorio, looking eastwards): the last visible ditch still left in Borgo Zucco. Despite being visible only for few metres, it is the final bit of a long channel system. It is ultimately connected to the north-eastern branch of Brenta channels in Bassano. The picture was taken in winter.

The same part of Canale Sanatorio, in winter (looking westwards). After running through Borgo Zucco, this ditch enters the borough of San Fortunato (behind the building in the background) and splits: one branch reaches Brenta again, the other one brings water through the north eastern part of San Fortunato. >>
